Monday November 10, 2014 - HW #8 Linear Regression

Define Linear Regression
To describe the linear association between quantitative variables, a statistical procedure called regression often is used to construct a model. Regression is used to assess the contribution of one or more independent variables  to one dependent variable.

It also can be used to predict the value of one variable based on the values of others. When there is only one independent variable and when the relationship can be expressed as a straight line, the procedure is called simple linear regression.

If there are more than one independent variable, then its called multiple regression
(See HW#9).

As a business major, you will see both linear and multiple regression again, possibly many time in future classes. Homework #8 and #9 will provide a simple introduction and more importantly how to use Excel to solve problems. Again you will see this again.

Fwd: SpaceX: Pioneering Commercial Space Flight

BY: Haston Lewis

Between his early success with PayPal and his now ubiquitous Tesla Motors revolutionizing the automobile industry, one wonders what CEO Elon Musk does with his free time. Well, in 2002 he founded SpaceX with the intention to "revolutionize space technology, with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets."

In its 12 years of operation SpaceX has recorded multiple historic achievements. In 2008, Falcon 1 became the first privately funded, liquid-fueled rocket to reach orbit.  In 2010, with the spacecraft Dragon, SpaceX became the first private company to successfully launch, orbit and recover a spacecraft. Dragon went on to become the first spacecraft from a private company sent to the International Space Station in 2012.

Dragon, a historic spacecraft created by SpaceX.

SpaceX is a pioneer in the commercial space flight industry. Besides its work with NASA, the company has already launched 12 Falcon 9 rockets for paying customers and has at least 30 more launches planned for the future. This is all made possible by the fact that SpaceX develops and manufactures nearly all of the components of it's rockets and spacecraft in-house, up to and including the rocket engines themselves. As of May 2012, SpaceX had operated on approximately $1 billion dollars of total funding of which $200M was provided by private equity, $100M invested by Elon Musk himself and an additional $100M came from other investors. The rest of the firm's funding comes mainly from long-term launch contracts with NASA.

The Falcon 9 launch vehicle.

For the future, SpaceX is focused on developing rapidly reusable launch system. To this end it has developed Grasshopper, an experimental, reusable sub-orbital rocket capable of both vertical takeoff and vertical landing. The technology gained from the experimental Grasshopper program will go towards SpaceX's eventual goal of creating a spacecraft that is capable of repeated space flights, as opposed to current spacecraft which are greatly destroyed by the process of exiting and re-entering the Earth's atmosphere.
It is an exciting time to be a part of the human species thanks to companies like Tesla and SpaceX. Although infantile in the grand scheme of things, this company has already managed to revolutionize and commercialize space travel. One can only look forward to what SpaceX will do next.

Grasshopper is capable of vertical takeoff and landing.

Have you ever found yourself lacking the time, effort or energy to conduct research? Let's imagine that you are interested in penetrating the medical marijuana industry in a state where it is not yet legal. Penetrating this market in one of these states early enough could be very lucrative. Georgia, for example, has not legalized medical marijuana, but is well on its way to becoming one of the first states in the Southeast to appreciate its benefits. As an investor, I would need to know a plethora of information to before making a decision. How long will it take for Georgia to legalize medical marijuana? Are there any special licenses needed to operate a cannabis related business? If so, what are the requirements? What is the projected tax rate for a cannabis related business? How many doctors in Georgia have expressed interest in prescribing marijuana as a medication and where are they? If so, what are the requirements? Are there any legislators or
other elected officials with the legalization of medical marijuana in their platforms? With these questions representing only a few concerns, it could take days, or even months to gather enough information to make a wise business decision.

Conducting research is often times frustrating and very time consuming, but Brickwork India, a remote business solutions service, saves you the time and hassle. Brickwork India allows you to create an entire office remotely. Takes Two to Tango: The use of Apple Pay

By: Zachary Prince

With the releasing of the iPhone 6 came extreme anticipation and excitement. Apple promised its consumers to release a new phone with hundreds of new features and capabilities that would revolutionize the phone industry. Amongst these features was Apple Pay. Apple Pay was going to be the first step towards the extermination of physical Debit and Credit cards, allowing customers to make purchases by simply pressing the home button on their phones. IPhone users would be able to connect all of their Cards to their cellular phones so that when making purchases, participating stores would also have an Apple device that could scan the top of the phones solidifying the purchase.  Apple promised its users that they would make the process of making purchases astoundingly more convenient and faster, even showing a video at their Apple Keynote timing and comparing the differences between making a normal card purchase and a purchase using Apple Pay. The new feature sounds great, right?
With the new Apple Pay feature, it takes two to tango. Apple Pay requires participation from the customer, as well as major stores that its customers use.  Since the release of Apple Pay on October 20th, several major stores have said they would not use it. Amongst these stores, is the number retail group, Wal-Mart, as well as the large pharmacy-retail group, CVS.  There are various reasons as to why certain groups are hesitant to using Apple Pay such as credit card fees, stores being unable to track customer habits, and certain stores have already began using their own systems known as Current C. The Merchant systems that retail groups such as Wal-Mart, Sears, and Target have been using, use more cumbersome technology that requires customers to scan a "Quick-Response" bypassing the credit system, and in most cases reducing costs for merchants which also can reduce cost for customers. However, researches have found that Apple Pay is still very competitive from a convenience standpoint and they also pointed out that if it catches on, retailers would be forced to go along.
The success of Apple is going to come down to price versus convenience. Although price typically wins, do you think the convenience of Apple Pay will have the upper hand in this Case? Do you think the success of Apple Pay will determine whether or not the iPhone 6 truly was a revolutionary phone? In the future do you believe Apple Pay will change the way people make purchases?
Here's an article that discusses Apple Pay and its future:

Tech-Future Royal Rumble: Tablet vs. P.C.

BY: Vernon Wilson

Since its introduction in 1970's, the Laptop Computer has ruled as a revolutionary means of computing on the go. Unlike its predecessor, the Desktop computer, Laptops received decades of praise because of their portability and their ease of use. Laptops dominated the personal computing league for Decades carving out a $54 Billion dollar Industry, despite eventually sharing the market with newer devices such as PDA's, Blackberries, and smartphones over in

The Technology industry gave way to a worthy opponent of knocking off the 40 year Computing Champion. Until a new opponent entered the market, and challenged the King This Device was the Tablet computer. A tablet is a mobile computer with display, circuitry and battery in a single unit. Tablets come equipped with sensors, including cameras, a microphone, an accelerometer and a touchscreen, with finger or stylus gestures substituting for the use of computer mouse and keyboard. Tablets are driving a wave of adoption more quickly than that of laptops and smartphones. With 40% annual growth since 2010, and over 285 Million units sold world wide, many have raised the question, if we are truly living in a post-PC world?   With the future looking cloudy for the undisputed Computing champion, I have set the stage for a Technology Royal Rumble, to see who has the edge in the future consumers mind.

The Tablet now provides users with similar computing capabilities of the laptop, but the portability of a Cell Phone. IPads for example are providing users with the same Tablets have Unlike the Laptop whose average weight ranges from 5 to 12 pounds; Tablets provide a lighter alternative, which weighs only 1 pound.

Tablets are arguably the user-friendliest devices on the market, which transcends all ages. With 1 in three American Children, under the age of 18, owning a Tablet device, Tablets are becoming the technology that teach our children in school, become our Cashiers at stores, and even trusted to help our Police force and Hospitals better serve our communities.

The Tablet prices also make them direct competition for laptops too. This is mainly due to the low cost in producing these devices. With the average price of premium Tablets being $350 dollars, and with great consumer models for as low as $65 dollars, it's no wonder why 64% of Americans will own a Tablet by the end of this year.

Laptop Technology is not going out without a fight! While Tablets and smart phones, are both capable of providing quality computing options, and cheaper alternatives, however the Laptop's hardware is second to none in what it provides users. Laptops come with full keyboards, large screens and much higher screen resolution than you would find on any tablet. In addition to the external Hardware, Laptops typically contain triple the storage space as tablet. Flash Player for example of a common software to Laptops that is not so common with Tablets. This makes many activities such as visiting certain websites, and streaming content on web browser very difficult for Tablets that is easy for PCs. Best pick Technology for College Students And with DVD, Blu-ray discs, card slots for full-size SD cards, and USB-connected flash drives and portable drives, Laptops are used for functions that Tablets cannot pack into a 1 pound frame.

So with so much newfound success for the Tablet, who has the clear edge in the future? Many Experts still speculate the long-term success of the Tablet computer.

For a consumer Tablets are becoming a much cheaper alternative, for recreational computer use, and to perform everyday task, however Professionals must depend on the reliability of a traditional Laptop. With Companies such as Apple selling over 5.5 Million MacBook each quarter, The Company that sells 90% of the worlds Premium Laptops, is actually growing in appeal. I believe that Though the Tablet will pose a threat to middle of the road laptops that perform no specific function, High laptops such as Apple MacBook, and Chrome books will remain, Highly valued, and keep laptops relevant.

So the clear winner is? Well comment below and you decide!

Shadow: The App That Records Your Dream

By: Lester Bundrage

Shadow is an app that helps you record and remember your dreams. Shadow is also an alarm clock that wakes you up by increasing the volume and vibration. This allows you to gently rise from sleep, which in return increases the percentage of you remembering your dreams.

So it goes something like this: The alarm goes off, you open your eyes, and forget everything that passed through your brain during the night. It's also estimated that we forget about 95 percent of our dreams within five minutes of waking up, meaning we lose the bulk of the weird and potentially insightful stuff we think about while asleep. There are ways to abate that, but none are ideal. Dream journals are high-maintenance and just a little too new age, and the apps available leave much to be desired from an interaction and design standpoint. But Shadow, a new app recently launched on Kickstarter for funding, could be a convenient and beautifully designed solution to the problem of forgetting our dreams. Hunter Lee Soik and Jason Carvalho are the ones who came up with this great idea and created Shadow. since, Shadow is an app, it makes recording and remembering your dreams very simple. Shadow is an alarm clock/digital dream recorder, but the designers mostly want to create the largest dream database in the world. Most of the time, you have your alarm clock that goes off and quickly blasts through your sleep, waking you up immediately from your sleep. So, Shadow's alarm system slowly transitions you through your hypnopompic state. So during your not-quite-asleep, not-quite-awake phase of sleep, it has be proven to help you better remember your dreams.
Soon as you turn off the alarm, you can record your dreams either with your voice or typing with text. The app then tracks your dreams by writing them and storing them in a growing digital dream journal that keeps track of your long-term dreams and sleep patterns. For your privacy settings, you can either keep the dream data to yourself, or you can share your dreams with others, allowing the data to be put on the online cloud storage where your dreams can be studied and analyzed. The more you use the app, the better it gets at visualizing patterns and making connections between your sleep patterns, daily life, and what you dream about. "There's a lot going on in the subconscious mind that if you can start to pull out little details, you start to get a wider picture of yourself," says Soik. The goal is to make a massive dream database that can be used to analyze our collective subconscious thoughts and potentially be an information source for scientists who study dreams.

Shadow is hoping to use the dream data you put in to boost the entire service. Apps like Nike Plus already allow you to keep detailed notes on your physiological self. You get to monitor your heart rate, how many calories burned during exercise, and how much sleep you get each night, but we have little understanding of how it connects to the bigger picture of "the inner self." "Shadow wanted to be the next level, which was getting to understand the whole psychological layer," Soik said. They wanted to know things like, what does this data mean to me? For example, if I walk about 10,000 steps, will I fall asleep 5 percent faster, or would I have more positive dreams?"

Below are videos to more information on the industry.
