Google Fiber

By: Sean Crain

My focus for today's blog will be discussing the overall impact of the Google Fiber technology. What is Google Fiber? Google fiber is the combination of fiberglass wires that transfers information through the process of light. Growing up, and even now, information has been transferred through multiple wires by way of electricity. Google Fiber powers up to 1,000 Mbps for both download and upload, making it 100 times faster than today's basic broadband, which as a result, allows you to get what you want instantaneously. Google Fiber says its service allows for the download of a full movie in less than two minutes and makes it so you no longer have to wait on things buffering, so everything will be ready to go when you are. So whether you are video chatting, uploading videos, or playing online games, all you need to do is click and you're there. Google fiber is located in 3 places so far: Kansas City, Provo, and Austin.

Being from Kansas City, I have been able to experience Google fiber up front and personal. The speeds are quite remarkable and definitely don't compare to anything else I have experienced in my life. I believe that this technology can be used for multiple improvements in every day life from the increasing of internet speeds on school campuses for a faster feedback response to the improving of traffic signals throughout cites or even robotics.

Some other key features Google fiber has consist of is 1 terabyte of cloud storage for all of your favorite Google products and information So on any occasion you can have access to all your information in one place, no matter if anything else happens to take a toll on your major devices. This is convenient because it is a cloud full of your own personal information such as music, videos, and documents that you can store in a large quantity.  Another perk is being able to watch over 150 HD channels and tens of thousands of shows and movies all in one place. Which allows you to search instantaneously over of multiple viewings and recordings to access quite simply.

You can also turn all your devices into a remote control for your major appliances. Which make living at home a little more comfortable. As well as, being able to record up to 8 different programs all at the same time. This is good for families because it gives everyone the leisure to explore there own worlds from cartoons to drama without the interruption form anyone else's programming or relying on schedules.  Google fiber plans to expand to multiple countries nationwide such as Charlotte, Atlanta, Nashville, San Antonio, Salt Lake City, Portland, and San Jose.

Everyone who I have talked to back home really enjoys Google Fiber and the services it provides. With it being offered on the market as the same prices as other cable and internet providers, makes it a huge plus. This type of technology could make for a huge advancement in technology cause it allows you to do more without restrictions and the concept of light travel is especially appealing. I'm excited to see what specific advantages this technology has on a mass scale.

  1. This sounds exciting. Nothing is more annoying than staring at a rotating circle while your favorite movie is taking its sweet time buffering.

  3. Hopefully Google fiber begins to expand into Atlanta within the next 2 years. Comcast and XFinity seem to be some of the areas most popular internet service provided but their service isn't always reliable nor is it always fast. Comcast has something to look out for for sure. With Google fiber the speed of the internet will increase dramatically. Google already powerful as a major search engine will be making new strides in gaining market share for the internet as a whole.

  4. I had bit of experience working with telecommunications during an internship with Comcast, and one of my tasks was to examine municipal cable networks - many of which were utilizing fiberglass materials to transfer information. Google, however, seems to have executed the process much more efficiently, and in a more appealing manner. Google's impressive footprint allow it to offer perks of its Cloud service as a way to enhance the experience. I wonder what other avenues Google will choose to venture into next.
