Tech-Future Royal Rumble: Tablet vs. P.C.

BY: Vernon Wilson

Since its introduction in 1970's, the Laptop Computer has ruled as a revolutionary means of computing on the go. Unlike its predecessor, the Desktop computer, Laptops received decades of praise because of their portability and their ease of use. Laptops dominated the personal computing league for Decades carving out a $54 Billion dollar Industry, despite eventually sharing the market with newer devices such as PDA's, Blackberries, and smartphones over in

The Technology industry gave way to a worthy opponent of knocking off the 40 year Computing Champion. Until a new opponent entered the market, and challenged the King This Device was the Tablet computer. A tablet is a mobile computer with display, circuitry and battery in a single unit. Tablets come equipped with sensors, including cameras, a microphone, an accelerometer and a touchscreen, with finger or stylus gestures substituting for the use of computer mouse and keyboard. Tablets are driving a wave of adoption more quickly than that of laptops and smartphones. With 40% annual growth since 2010, and over 285 Million units sold world wide, many have raised the question, if we are truly living in a post-PC world?   With the future looking cloudy for the undisputed Computing champion, I have set the stage for a Technology Royal Rumble, to see who has the edge in the future consumers mind.

The Tablet now provides users with similar computing capabilities of the laptop, but the portability of a Cell Phone. IPads for example are providing users with the same Tablets have Unlike the Laptop whose average weight ranges from 5 to 12 pounds; Tablets provide a lighter alternative, which weighs only 1 pound.

Tablets are arguably the user-friendliest devices on the market, which transcends all ages. With 1 in three American Children, under the age of 18, owning a Tablet device, Tablets are becoming the technology that teach our children in school, become our Cashiers at stores, and even trusted to help our Police force and Hospitals better serve our communities.

The Tablet prices also make them direct competition for laptops too. This is mainly due to the low cost in producing these devices. With the average price of premium Tablets being $350 dollars, and with great consumer models for as low as $65 dollars, it's no wonder why 64% of Americans will own a Tablet by the end of this year.

Laptop Technology is not going out without a fight! While Tablets and smart phones, are both capable of providing quality computing options, and cheaper alternatives, however the Laptop's hardware is second to none in what it provides users. Laptops come with full keyboards, large screens and much higher screen resolution than you would find on any tablet. In addition to the external Hardware, Laptops typically contain triple the storage space as tablet. Flash Player for example of a common software to Laptops that is not so common with Tablets. This makes many activities such as visiting certain websites, and streaming content on web browser very difficult for Tablets that is easy for PCs. Best pick Technology for College Students And with DVD, Blu-ray discs, card slots for full-size SD cards, and USB-connected flash drives and portable drives, Laptops are used for functions that Tablets cannot pack into a 1 pound frame.

So with so much newfound success for the Tablet, who has the clear edge in the future? Many Experts still speculate the long-term success of the Tablet computer.

For a consumer Tablets are becoming a much cheaper alternative, for recreational computer use, and to perform everyday task, however Professionals must depend on the reliability of a traditional Laptop. With Companies such as Apple selling over 5.5 Million MacBook each quarter, The Company that sells 90% of the worlds Premium Laptops, is actually growing in appeal. I believe that Though the Tablet will pose a threat to middle of the road laptops that perform no specific function, High laptops such as Apple MacBook, and Chrome books will remain, Highly valued, and keep laptops relevant.

So the clear winner is? Well comment below and you decide!

  1. I like the Tablet for all commercial uses: retail, banking, healthcare, military.
I think the PC has its household uses, but that it will eventually become obsolete as did the boombox and the landmine telephones.
Can we get a tablet that wraps around the left forearm though? I need that. Forget a watch!

  2. I believe tablets will take over a higher share of the market for people who just use a laptop recreationally and don't look to save much information or do anything that requires a lot of computing power. However, I feel like laptops will still be widely used by professionals who work within excel, or program, or people who require a machine with a lot of computing power. They will also still be used by people who look to save a lot of information such as media files.

  3. Depending on your industry and the desired use of the user an ipad or PC is a very debatable choice. For industries such as retail and healthcare were mobility is a must a tablet is the way to go. But for the average student or person a small PC may due the trick. The Macbook air is a good example, small, compact, easy to carry while still running all the need software. One needs to make the choice depending on there intended use.

  4. With more mobile business, we are entering the age of the tablet. Offices and services are no longer limited to small locations and regions for professionals in healthcare and home services in particular. A tablet can help reduce costs of extra employees and travel costs. For example, if a repair man can now log work in his trucks tablet, he no longer needs a secretary to keep track of his job status and messages. The tablet is gaining ground on the PC.

  5. Such an interesting articles. Its so funny, because I often debate about whether to get rid of my laptop or not - especially since tablets are evolving to have keyboards and things of the like. I have definitely decided to keep my laptop. The storage space, the plug-in features, and the overall capabilities and possibilities of my computer simply cannot be found on the tablet. I think that the tablet may be good for a teenager, small child, or someone who is not dealing with extreme amounts of data, textbooks, or schoolwork all the time. Tablets are ideal for people with small music libraries or heavy cloud storage.

  6. Good post man. I think that the Tablet is going to be the ultimate tool in the workplace in the coming years. Although it is convenient to carry, in terms of processing power and storage using tablet can be cumbersome and that's why I still prefer a laptop. Even so, if we give it another decade or so, laptops will be as extinct as desktop computers. I'm excited to see what'll happen in the future.

  7. This is a really nice post bro. I think the Tablet has been a very nice alternative to the laptop. I'm in the music industry, and most of the musicians that I talk with say that in the future all music is going to be involving tablets, to save time, allow convenience and faster application.

  8. This is so weird, because I've recently been wrestling this idea of whether or not a tablet is just as effective as a PC. & I honestly just think that what's holding me back is my view of a tablet. If I can wrap my brain around the idea that tablets are just as, if not more, efficient/capable as PC's then I'll probably be making that switch soon that I think. We shall see.

  9. I believe tablet will ultimately replace pcs all together just because its easier to travel with and you can do everything on it like it was a pc

  10. I believe as time passes and as technology improves everything will keep getting smaller and but more advanced. When is a question on tablet vs. PC then I will choose PC, because it has a lot more functionality to but a tablet is more accessible.
