Search Engine Optimization

BY: Gary Clark II

SEO stands for search engine optimization.  It is a big thing in the modern world of digital and inline marketing.  Many times when people look for things on a search engine, they do not look past the first page of results.  Therefore, marketing your product or website so that it will be the first thing the consumer sees is very important.  "According to a study conducted at Cornell University, 80% of all clicks go to the top 3 listings." Even in writing for this blog post, most of my research came from the first page of results.

This field is important and growing in the present state of the 21st century.  There are all types of websites involved in the business of optimizing your visibility on the web. There are even blogs and online forums that give businesses tips and tricks. Some act as consultants and are literally hired to help companies increase their visibility to get more traffic to their websites.

SEO improves the chances the site will be recognized by search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing.  This is extremely relevant to our most recent class about search engines.  Though there are many, companies now want to make sure they are recognized by the most popular because of the lack of use by other search engines which have since lost massive amounts of business.

  1. Visibility is important for businesses, especially for those with small market reach. As shops begin to transition from physical locations to digital marketplaces, it is important for them to leverage SEO. How do you think startups can compete with internet giants like Amazon and Target?

  2. This is a very informative and important post because it is true that we only look at the top three listings in order to find some research. For our future entrepreneurs we would like to know how to increase our views online by getting our sites in the top listings or even on the first page.

This is a great advantage, as this allows a small market business to expand. In this digital age, should more companies start investing in improving their SEO for better success?

  6. SEO is a great tool, I actually used it in a job over the summer. I was working for media buying agency so we had multiple clients small and fortune 500 companies that pay a lot of money in order to make sure their company pops up first when certain "key words" are search in goole. It is a very lucrative business advertising using these search engine tools.

  7. What you explained with this post makes perfect sense. However, what doesn't make sense to me is how search engines would continually make money off of this. Everybody seeks to be on the first page, but the first page can only have so many results. Once the first page is filled with clients that paid top dollar for their information to be placed there, what's left for everybody else that comes after that? I would think that either they'd have to accept second place, or find another search engine (while the number of useful search engines is also finite). Even if a client were to offer higher pay for the slot that someone else previously paid for, wouldn't contracts be in place between the original clients and the search engine company to make such transactions prohibited?

  8. I think that the SEO is something that schools need to use more. Specifically Morehouse because of all the bad exposure the college has been getting. If this tool is used productively we can raise better awareness of all the great stuff we offer. This will increase our attendance rate, and make our school more attractive to potential donors.

  9. Search engine optimization is something that I heard about in high school. Bringing it back to my attention it makes me wonder about the effectiveness of using hashtags on social media networks. The hashtags are similar to the keywords that can are use for search purposes. In regards to marketing many companies and brands are beginning to use hashtags maximize their communication and brand awareness efforts. The concepts and goals of search engine optimization can be transferred for use social media purposes as well.
