Upon the inception of smart phones on the American market, consumers have
invested in them all, from the blackberry all the way to the iPhone 6. With
each new device, buyers have witnessed the evolution of the specifics of
the handset. One particular detail of the handset that has driven the mass
consumption of particular brands has been the display screen size. Most
recently even, we have observed and further succumbed to larger phone
display craze through Apple's iPhone 6. Nonetheless, the larger handset
display has been no stranger to iPhone's biggest rival Android.
Accordingly, the numbers crunched by Android experts equated to seven
percent of handsets having displays of 5 to 6.9 inches.
Why all the rage?! Interestingly enough, one would wonder the influence
that impacted these major brands--iPhone and Android. You guessed it--the Chinese culture. Phablets make up over 60 percent of the
mobile device market. A phablet is a recent word that has emerged in the
wave of post-modern technology. A phablet is a term that combines both
phone and tablet and refers to any phone who's screen exceeds 5.0 inches
but is less that 6.0 inches.
So the questions remains to what end will the Western world continue to
sensitize themselves toward the meticulous details of the mobile device. Is
one simply particular about acquiring all the newest fixtures to a handset;
is one simply mimicing the majority of the Asian population based on their
affixations; or is one merely genuinely interested in upsizing the handset
display for obviously logical reasons such as optimal viewing capacity. To
further examine this inquiry, it would behoove one to further delve into
this raised notion.

I think its funny to see Apple adapt to the trend and begin to make "phablets." We are in a world run by supply and demand. If the consumer is demanding a bigger screen then the companies are going to tap into the market. We are a generation that is continuously on the move. We want everything to be at our fingertips. That means we want to be able to pull out our phone and do everything that we would be able to do on our computer. Asia quickly realized this demand and it has definitely made its way to western civilization. I think we will continue you to see more and more people wanting these bigger phones. When I got my iPhone 6 the size threw me off but after a few days it seemed normal. These companies know that we will adjust and eventually the phablet will be the norm.

ReplyDeleteIt will be very interesting watching how the cell phone continues to be modified in these next few years. It will also be interesting to see how Apple reacts towards their biggest competitors, Android. In my opinion, it makes no sense for cell phone companies to keep making the screen bigger and bigger on future devices because one of the reasons the cell phone was created was to provide a lighter, easier to carry model that was nothing like big bulky house phones. Some phones now are almost as big as a house phone! They can barely fit in people's pockets. Overall, I know that phone size is a personal preference and some people love having bigger phones I'm sure. I am just saying that it will be interesting to see how Apple and Android approach phone size in future years.
