Excel In a Digital Age

By: Joshua Adkins

In the digital age, Excel spreadsheets are an essential tool used in the daily operations of any business. Excel has a wide variety of uses such as creating charts, collecting data, and monitor costs, income, employees, and inventories.  Numerous distinctive types of figures can be placed in an Excel spreadsheet and the data can be adjusted on a consistent basis. Excel can mange items such as small sets of data collected in surveys to large complex financial statements. Users of all levels are able to use and work through excel. Today excel skills are needed to prepare for the work force. For any finance related jobs, basic excel skills are required in order to qualify for the position. Excel is a tool that everyone should learn the basics of. I believe as we advance toward the future, a higher quality of excel skills will be demanded by employers.

  1. I agree with this article. I think that excel is a very useful tool in modern business practices, especially in management or specialty positions. One question I would pose is if excel itself will be able to keep up with the times in terms of technological advances. So far it seems to be able to get the job done. But how long before new features will need to be added due to new fields of organizing and statistics that need to be calculated? Just something to think about.

  2. Excel is certainly a useful tool for many different fields. A beneficial thing which needs to be implemented is the field specific additives or plug-ins which could be added for relative to your field. Some form of voice activated formula search and command would also be beneficial. If excel does not evolve with the workforce, it may become useless.

  4. I agree. Excel is definitely a great tool for business's to use to manipulate data and analyze it. However, I feel like Excel can keep up with these technological advances. Its a matter of can we, excel users, adapt and continue to learn to these technological advances.

  5. I wish this post had been a bit more detailed. I feel that Professor Sistrunk gives us quite a bit of information on the particular functions of Excel, so we would all agree that it is a, "a tool that everyone should learn the basics of".
