The Future of Furniture

BY: Malik Ray

A few weeks ago in Management Information Science, we sat as a class and watched several very interesting videos about the future of technology. We saw that cell phones would become merely pieces of glass, eventually. We noticed that that very same piece of glass acted as a planner, telephone, GPS, and much more. I noticed that this one product was able to interface with pretty much any object that was made of glass in the home – from the bathroom mirror, to the car windows - everything made of glass was able to recognize the device.

As I watched video I noticed something: The glass technology had adjusted to the "future", but why is the rest of the furniture in the house the same way that it appears today?

It turns out, this video simply was not addressing the many changes slated to occur in the homes of the future. There are many innovative products that are already production that are going to change the way that we view furniture.

Allow me to introduce you to some of the products of the future:

The Z-Island

Meet the new centerpiece of your kitchen. The Z-Island was designed for Scholtes by Zaha Hadid (a prominent architect, originally from Iraq). It has a heating sensor, touchscreen panels, sound activators, and aromatic dispensers. It also comes with its very own apple TV built into the console so that you may enjoy some television while you prepare your meal.

The Cocoon Bed

While not my favorite piece of futuristic bedroom furniture, I am sure there is market for the cocoon bed. More than a place to rest, its removable shell offers its sleeper a surround sound system, a water mattress, and therapeutic lighting. You will feel as if you are truly sleeping in the stars.

Kure Dining Room Table

We finally can live like The Jetsons! Clearly inspired by the childhood favorite cartoon, this Turkey masterpiece was created as a space saving masterpiece. Colors are customizable and the table operates by magnetism and not electricity.

The New Couch

Finally, allow me to introduce you to your new couch. Designed to simulate sitting on a cloud, David Koo and Zheng Yawei have used a giant magnet to levitate this super soft cushion up into the air. This sure sounds like something that I would like to lay on after a hard day of class.

The future is bright for furniture! Perhaps we should start saving now...

Here are some more videos to show case the future of home furniture:

  6. As everything else is evolving why wouldn't furniture! Great post. Every needs improvements. I defiantly like the idea of have a pod as a bed room and bed. This allows for less energy usage in that you can control the heating and air of a smaller space for the 8 hours that you are asleep. New furniture like this is ascetically appeal while also providing energy and money saving benefits. Can't wait to see furniture like this in stores!
